In 2024, X had to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/taylor-swift-deepfake-images-x-protecttaylorswift-6e5f9d086d1923a1cf5f5cde39fc890a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">block<\/a> searches of <b>\u201cTaylor Swift\u201d<\/b> on the platform as pornographic deepfake images of the artist circulated online, making Swift the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/taylor-swift-ai-images-protecttaylorswift-nonconsensual-d5eb3f98084bcbb670a185f7aeec78b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most famous victim<\/a> of deepfakes at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The trademark applications, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gerbenlaw.com\/blog\/taylor-swift-moves-to-trademark-her-voice-and-image-as-ai-threats-grow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first spotted<\/a> by intellectual property attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben IP, include voice recordings of Swift saying <a href=\"https:\/\/tmng-al.uspto.gov\/resting2\/api\/casedoc\/cms\/case\/99784979\/tmdocument\/20260424162005244899SPE0003.wav\"><b>&#8220;Hey, it&#8217;s Taylor&#8221;<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b>and <a href=\"https:\/\/tmng-al.uspto.gov\/resting2\/api\/casedoc\/cms\/case\/99784980\/tmdocument\/20260424162012887775SPE0003.wav\"><b>&#8220;Hey, it&#8217;s Taylor Swift,\u201d<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b>as well as an <a href=\"https:\/\/tmng-al.uspto.gov\/resting2\/api\/casedoc\/cms\/case\/99784977\/tmdocument\/20260424161925538645DRW0001.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">image<\/a> showing her holding a pink guitar with a black strap and wearing a multi-colored iridescent bodysuit with silver boots. In January, <i>The Wall Street Journal<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/matthew-mcconaughey-trademarks-himself-to-fight-ai-misuse-8ffe76a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that actor <b>Matthew<\/b> <b>McConaughey<\/b> has had eight trademark applications approved by the US PTO featuring him staring, smiling and talking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Lawyers for the actor said the trademarks are designed to prevent AI apps or users from generating copies of McConaughey\u2019s voice or likeness without permission. The trademarks include a seven-second clip of the actor on a porch, a three-second clip showing him sitting in front of a Christmas tree and an audio of McConaughey saying,\u00a0\u201cAlright, alright, alright,\u201d a line from the 1993 film <i>Dazed and Confused, <\/i>according to the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">McConaughey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/matthew-mcconaughey-trademarks-himself-to-fight-ai-misuse-8ffe76a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the <i>WSJ <\/i>in an email: \u201cMy team and I want to know that when my voice or likeness is ever used, it\u2019s because I approved and signed off on it. We want to create a clear perimeter around ownership with consent and attribution the norm in an AI world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Jonathan Pollack<\/b>, one of McConaughey\u2019s attorneys, told the newspaper: \u201cIn a world where we\u2019re watching everybody scramble to figure out what to do about AI misuse, we have a tool now to stop someone in their tracks or take them to federal court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>YouTube<\/b> recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/youtube-extends-deepfake-detection-tool-access-to-celebrities-and-talent-agencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanded<\/a> its AI likeness detection tool to the wider entertainment industry, opening access to celebrities and talent agencies for the first time. The detection system works similarly to YouTube\u2019s\u00a0<b>Content<\/b>\u00a0<b>ID<\/b>, which rightsholders use to flag unauthorized use of copyrighted material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The expansion came six months after\u00a0<b>YouTube<\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/youtube-showcases-new-ai-likeness-detection-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">started rolling out<\/a>\u00a0the AI detection tool in October, which was limited at the time to a specific set of creators with YouTube channels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The tool was developed with support from talent agencies and management companies, including <b>Creative Artists Agency<\/b> (CAA), <b>United Talent Agency<\/b> (UTA), <b>WME<\/b>, and<b> Untitled Management.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the music industry, deepfakes have become prevalent in recent years. In 2023, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/this-drake-ai-rip-off-already-has-250000-plays-on-spotify-is-it-a-ticking-time-bomb-for-music-rightsholders\/\">infamous \u201cfake Drake\u201d track<\/a> garnered hundreds of thousands of streams before it was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/apple-music-deezer-tidal-pull-down-viral-ai-drake-and-the-weeknd-track\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pulled down<\/a>\u00a0by media platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As MBW previously reported, the wider music industry has been clamping down on deepfakes in recent months. Last month,\u00a0<b>Sony<\/b>\u00a0<b>Music<\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-music-has-targeted-135000-deepfakes-of-its-artists-music-for-removal-from-streaming-platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked streaming platforms<\/a>\u00a0to take down more than <b>135,000<\/b> songs it says were created by fraudsters using generative AI to impersonate artists on its roster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Meanwhile,\u00a0<b>Spotify<\/b>\u00a0last month\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/amid-rise-of-ai-deepfakes-spotify-to-let-artists-vet-releases-before-they-appear-on-their-profiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0it was piloting a new opt-in feature that lets artists review and approve eligible releases before they go live.
