Primary Wave Music has partnered with Derry Music Company for the music, publishing copyrights, and recording catalog of legendary jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck.<\/p>\n
The deal also gives Primary Wave<\/b> a share in the licensing of Dave Brubeck<\/b>\u2019s name, image and likeness rights, according to its press release on Tuesday (November 18).<\/p>\n
The publisher will handle marketing, branding and licensing opportunities for Brubeck\u2019s catalog, including sync deals for film and TV projects.<\/p>\n
Brubeck’s catalog includes compositions such as In Your Own Sweet Way <\/i>and It’s a Raggy Waltz,<\/i> along with recordings featuring the Dave Brubeck Quartet<\/b>. The group’s 1959 album Time Out<\/i> became the first jazz record to sell one million copies, driven by Take Five, <\/i>which was composed by saxophonist Paul Desmond <\/b>that became the best-selling jazz single of all time.<\/p>\n
Take Five <\/i>was initially released as a promotional single in September 1959 but gained traction two years later, eventually propelling Time Out<\/i> to No. 2 on the Billboard<\/i> Top 200. The album has sold more than two million copies and entered the Grammy Hall of Fame<\/b> in 2009. The New York Times<\/i> called it a “masterpiece.”<\/p>\n \u201cThe Brubeck family enjoys a rare position in the musical world as we have inherited an exceptional legacy. In 2007, he received a Living Legacy Jazz Award<\/b> from Kennedy Center<\/b> and the Arison Award<\/b> from the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n Dave Brubeck\u2019s catalog further expands Primary Wave\u2019s repertoire of compositions from legacy artists. Earlier in November, the company entered into a partnership<\/a> with the estate of Phil<\/b> Lynott<\/b>, co-founder and songwriter of iconic Irish rock band Thin Lizzy<\/b>.<\/p>\n Last month, the company struck a partnership with Grammy winner Patti<\/b> LaBelle<\/b>.<\/p>\n In July, the company\u00a0struck a music rights deal<\/a>\u00a0with the Estate of legendary English blues rock singer-songwriter and guitarist, Peter<\/b> Green<\/b>.<\/p>\n In June, Primary Wave\u00a0partnered with<\/a>\u00a0Grammy-nominated band the Cars<\/b>.<\/p>\n In March, the company\u00a0acquired<\/a>\u00a0a stake in the Biggie<\/b> Smalls<\/b> catalog, which was reported to have valued the artist\u2019s estate at $200 million<\/b>.<\/p>\n Primary Wave\u2019s portfolio also includes rights to works by\u00a0Bob Marley<\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<\/b>Whitney Houston<\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<\/b>Stevie Nicks<\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Luther Vandross<\/b><\/a>.
