Stat Of the Week is supported by\u00a0music data analytics firm\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chartmetric.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chartmetric<\/a>.\n<p>2023 was a record-breaking year for UK-based collection society, PRS for Music.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday (May 28), PRS reported that it became &#8220;a billion-pound society&#8221; last year after collecting \u00a31.08 billion in revenues in 2023, which was up <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>12.5% YoY<\/strong><\/span> and represented a \u00a3120.9 million increase compared to 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The London-headquartered society&#8217;s \u00a31.08 billion revenue haul last year converts to <strong>USD $1.343 billion<\/strong> at the average annual exchange rate published by the IRS for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>PRS said on Tuesday that the milestone arrived two years ahead of schedule. The organization set out a \u00a31 billion revenue target for 2026 at its AGM back in 2021, as part of its &#8220;five-year plan,&#8221; which also includes <em>paying out<\/em> \u00a31 billion in royalties to its members by 2026\u00a0and achieving a cost-to-income ratio below 10%.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__tweeny hidden-xs hidden-ms hidden-sm\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"992 1200 1440\" data-name=\"628x90 Sponsor banner #3 (992+1200+1440)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor3_628\" id=\"dfp_sponsor3_628\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__banner mb-advert__banner--inline hidden-xs hidden-sm hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"480\" data-name=\"468x60 Sponsor banner #3 (480)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor3_468\" id=\"dfp_sponsor3_468\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__mobile mb-advert__mobile--inline hidden-ms hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"320 768\" data-name=\"300x50 Sponsor banner #3 (320+768)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor3_300\" id=\"dfp_sponsor3_300\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>PRS also reported on Tuesday that it <em>paid out<\/em> a record <strong>\u00a3943.6 million<\/strong> of royalties to songwriters, composers, and music publishers in 2023, which converts to <strong>USD $1.17 billion<\/strong> at the average annual exchange rate published by the IRS.<\/p>\n<p>The society&#8217;s royalty distribution figure was up <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>12.8% YoY<\/strong> <\/span>and marked an increase of \u00a3107.4 million ($133.58m) versus 2022.<\/p>\n<p>PRS also reported that over <strong>6,000<\/strong> songwriters and composers were paid for the first time in 2023, receiving a combined <strong>\u00a31.5 million<\/strong> ($1.86m) in royalties. PRS said that it was able to achieve this &#8220;b<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">y migrating its distribution systems to the Oracle Cloud, [becoming] the first society to do so&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Speaking with MBW about these latest results, PRS CEO Andrea Czapary Martin noted that hitting the organization&#8217;s \u00a31 billion collection target two years ahead of schedule is &#8220;incredible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Martin added:\u00a0 &#8220;We aren&#8217;t there on payouts yet. But we&#8217;re very close. My vision to ascend to a billion-pound society in royalties paid out isn&#8217;t just a goal \u2014 it reflects our commitment to music creators worldwide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Andrea Czapary Martin, PRS for Music<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>PRS also breaks down its revenues and distributions for 2023 by source.<\/p>\n<p>According to the results published on Tuesday,\u00a0 PRS collected <strong>\u00a3366.5 million<\/strong> ($455.84m) from music used online in 2023, which it reports was up <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>8.5% YoY<\/strong><\/span> (\u00a328.7m) on a constant currency basis.<\/p>\n<p>Royalties <em>paid out<\/em> from music used online (music streaming, video-on-demand and video games) grew <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>23.2% YoY<\/strong><\/span> or \u00a367.9 million to \u00a3360.3 million ($448.13m), which, according to PRS, was driven by the &#8220;continued growth in streaming and shift from broadcast to on-demand consumption&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>International<\/strong> <strong>revenue<\/strong> for 2023, meanwhile, totaled <strong>\u00a3339.3 million ($422.01m)<\/strong>, an increase of <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>25.9% YoY<\/strong><\/span> (\u00a369.9m) at constant currency.<\/p>\n<p>International <em>distributions<\/em> reached \u00a3283.4 million ($352.48m), up <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>19.35% YoY.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Europe<\/strong> remained the biggest market for PRS members\u2019 music in 2023, with revenue collections exceeding <strong>\u00a3181 million ($225.12m)<\/strong>, up <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>23% YoY.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Total royalties from <strong>North<\/strong> <strong>America<\/strong>, meanwhile, increased by <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>25% YoY<\/strong><\/span>, or by \u00a321.1 million, to over <strong>\u00a3105 million<\/strong> ($130.59m) in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>International revenue from <strong>Latin<\/strong> <strong>America<\/strong> reached \u00a315.8 million ($19.65m) in 2023, up <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>77.5% YoY, <\/strong><\/span>while revenues generated in the\u00a0 <strong>Middle<\/strong> <strong>East<\/strong> <strong>&amp;<\/strong> <strong>Africa<\/strong> grew <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>118.8% YoY<\/strong><\/span> to<strong> \u00a33.5 million ($4.35m).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>International royalties collected through the Major Live Concert Service (MLCS) reached \u00a319 million ($23.63m), an uplift of <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>210% YoY<\/strong><\/span> in 2023. The MLCS is PRS for Music\u2019s proprietary offering that services royalties from large concert and events.<\/p>\n<p>Public Performance revenues reached \u00a3251.7 million ($313.05m), up <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>10% YoY<\/strong><\/span>, while r<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">oyalties paid out from public performance, including live music, reached \u00a3188.2 million ($234.07m), up <\/span><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>2% YoY.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on PRS for Music&#8217;s 2023 results on Tuesday, CEO\u00a0Andrea Czapary Martin, said: &#8220;Our remarkable performance in 2023 is a testament to the team\u2019s hard work behind the scenes of the music industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not just surpassing financial milestones at the lowest cost-to-income ratio amongst our peers; we&#8217;re orchestrating a significant shift in the music business.
